NLR – until No Leprosy Remains – (in the Netherlands better known as Leprastichting) has been committed to a world without leprosy and without severe physical and psychological symptoms due to leprosy. The goal: A world without leprosy in 2040. With knowledge and collaboration, this disease can be eliminated within a generation. To break the chain of infection, NLR focusses on early detection and (preventive) treatment of patients and their loved ones, education, training and funding scientific research.

NLR is an international NGO and has been committed to the fight against leprosy with heart and soul for more than 55 years. The organisation is changing from a Dutch headquarters with five country offices to an alliance of independent NGOs: Nepal, India and Indonesia are already independent. About 35 employees work at the international office in Amsterdam and about 150 employees in total work at the alliance members.

NLR is an ANBI with CBF recognition and receives the support of 41,500 private and leading institutional donors, including the Dutch Postcode Lottery. The annual income is approximately € 6 million. NLR is active in national and international networks and has a leading role in the International Federation of Leprosy Organizations (ILEP) and the Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy.

In addition to NLR, the board is also a supervisor of Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI), a research partnership in which several leading organisations in the field of leprosy control participate.

General competences of the members of the Supervisory Board:

  • Endorse the vision and goals of NLR
  • Demonstrated experience with international collaboration
  • Affinity with charities
  • General managerial qualities and experience
  • Ability to review the policies and functioning of the organisation
  • Supervisory experience, preferably with international organisations
  • Integrity, responsible, with an independent attitude
  • Connective and involved, creating an open culture, with attention to diversity and inclusion
  • A broad social orientation and a network relevant to the organisation
  • Academic working and thinking level
  • Sufficient availability

Additional profile characteristics:

  • Extensive experience in the field of HRM and organisational development as a director or as an HRM professional at board level
  • Experience with a vision on governance-issues
  • Has an understanding of governance processes and transformations within complex organisations

The Supervisory Board monitors the director and her policies. The Supervisory Board also monitors the general course of events in the organisation. The meetings of the Supervisory Board are held at least four times a year, at the office of Leprastichting in Amsterdam. In addition, the Supervisory Board meets at least once a year to discuss strategic developments and there are special events of the organisation where participation is appreciated. Meetings and communications are conducted in English.

For this position, please note the following:

  • The work takes approximately one to two parts of a day per month;
  • The work of the Supervisory Board is unpaid, expenses incurred in performing the position are reimbursed;
  • The appointment is for a period of 4 years and can be extended once for the same period.
